The Back Story
This 3008 has been owned from new by a family friend, Dr Nina. Nina lives locally in Stroud, but works at a private hospital in Bristol and so bought this 3008 Allure Puretech in 2019 to manage the daily motorway journey on the M5. In doing so, this replaced the previous-generation 3008 that Nina had owned beforehand. When she purchased it, it set her back £24,000.
It’s performed really well for her, being super-comfortable, reliable and economical. In the seven years that she has owned it, Nina has covered nearly 100,000 miles – but that’s not why she has now parted with it.
A change in personal circumstances means that Nina is now buying a house in Bristol and moving much closer to work – and so doesn’t need such a large and sporty car. In fact, she has done a deal with one of her children and bought their smaller Peugeot, and so this 3008 is now surplus to requirements.
I’ve known the family for many years, and know how they look after their cars, so I was pleased to buy this one into stock and now offer it for sale.
Peugeot 3008 Ownership in General
This generation of 3008 was launched in the UK in 2016 and signposted a renaissance for Peugeot, which had previously marketed a range of worthy, but boring and stodgy cars. This 3008 changed all that – with sharp ultra-modern styling, improved comfort and a step-change in electronics.
Everyone considering a 3008 of this generation will be aware of the notorious “wet belt” concerns with the cambelt system. On this model, Peugeot launched this new technology, where the cambelt runs inside the engine oil, using it for increased lubrication and reduced friction. This seemed like a good idea – until the oil caused the belts to degrade and break up, in turn blocking the oil pick up with debris. Ten years on, the wet-belt technology is now commonplace and better understood; the requirement to use only the correct grade engine oil, and to replace the belt at least every 60,000 miles is now well known, and garages are now familiar with the technique to replace this type of belt. In this particular example, the belt has just been replaced to give peace of mind – this was done early, only 2-and-a-half years and 30k miles after it was previously changed. The garage reported no degradation at all in the previous belt, but as a precaution, I felt it was worth doing.
I’ve only taken this car on short local trips since it came into stock, but it is quick off the mark, handles well without any knocks or rattles or squeaks, has plenty of equipment and interior space, is very comfortable and it all presents itself very well and in excellent condition throughout.
Specification of this example
Peugeot really upped their game with this range, winning numerous awards for its distinctive styling, upscale interior and practical layout. Not only does it look great, it embraces the whole SUV concept well, with higher driving position, soft-road looks, and space for all the family and their luggage. It drives really well too – plenty quick enough round town, comfortable on a longer run, and all the right equipment.
The 1.2-litre 3-cylinder 12-valve turbocharged petrol engine produces 129bhp and a huge 230Nm torque; that powers it up to 60mph in about 10 secs and on to a maximum speed of 124mph (where legal of course!). It’s plenty powerful enough either around town, or out on the open road.
This example is the 1.2 PureTech Allure Start/Stop. The 3008 model range can be confusing, with several special editions etc. Allure sits roughly in the middle and is the most popular trim choice. It adds funky 18” diamond-cut alloy wheels, front parking sensors and rear reversing camera, and smartphone mirroring (Android Auto and Apple Car Play) on top of the already generous specification of the Active model. This example also benefits from adaptive cruise control and “special paint”.
Peugeot aimed to “wow” the consumer with their comfort and equipment level, and this example has pretty much everything that you could reasonably want or expect by way of useful equipment! The roster features dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, 18” Detroit-pattern alloy wheels, 6-speed manual gearbox, front and rear parking sensors with colour reversing camera, central 8.0” touchscreen featuring inbuilt satellite navigation, Apple Car Play and Android Auto mirroring, customizable digital dashboard, electric windows all-round, electrically adjustable, heated and power-folding door mirrors, automatic lights, automatic wipers, Bluetooth phone and audio system with USB inputs and steering-wheel mounted controls, aluminium roof rails, and height adjustable front seats and steering wheel.
It also boasts a full complement of safety equipment, including driver’s, passenger’s, side and curtain airbags, five seats each with a head restraint and three-point seat belt, anti-lock brakes, Emergency Brake Force Distribution, Emergency Brake Assist, Traction Control, tyre pressure monitoring, blind spot monitoring, seatbelt pre-tensioners, and ISOFIX mountings to the outer rear seats AND the front passenger seat!
This version is also pretty economical. Being a Petrol Euro 6, it is ULEZ compliant. Car tax is just £200 a year. For the size of car the combined fuel economy is an excellent 40.4mpg making this car easy to justify on cost grounds!
This car’s condition
We have known Nina and her family for many years, and I know how well they all look after their cars. They are always maintained “on the button” – after all, Nina is a surgeon, so she has to be able to depend on her car getting her to work.
Nina bought this 3008 brand-new from the local Peugeot main dealer. Since then, the branch has lost the Peugeot franchise and now acts as an independent garage, but with the same Peugeot experienced team behind it. Nina has had the servicing and maintenance carried out by a combination of them, the local Vauxhall dealer who has a dealership literally at the bottom of her road, and other local trusted independents.
Having owned the car for seven years, Nina has covered consistently around 14k miles each year. The vast majority of this has been motorway miles – up and down the M5 from Stroud to Bristol for work several times a week. On top of that, Nina’s daughter has moved to Yorkshire, so there are occasional trips over that distance too. So the car has benefitted from doing mostly long runs, which reduces wear on components like the clutch.
The Ultimate Red paintwork (described by Peugeot as “Special Paint” – apparently it requires a base coat, then a different top coat, before a coat of lacquer!) is bright and shiny, set off by the very smart and eye-catching diamond cut 18” Detroit pattern alloy wheels. At this mileage, you might expect there to be some signs of use, but this example is much better than you might anticipate. There are one or two light surface scratches, some minor kerbing to each front wheel, and a few stone chips to evidence the mileage, but overall, the whole car presents very well indeed and looks smart throughout. There were a number of stone chips to the leading edge of the bonnet, consistent with all those motorway miles – so I have had the bonnet repainted to repair that damage.
The interior is also immaculate, and is a comfortable place to be, with two-tone grey half-leather and fabric seats. Both front seats are height adjustable too, for added comfort. There’s no damage to the upholstery, and with the carpets protected from new with good quality overmats. There’s no cigarette lighter or front ashtray, and Nina is obviously a non-smoker.
This example uses the 6-speed manual transmission. This works smoothly through the gears, and the car performs really well on the road too. It accelerates cleanly and smoothly, with a characteristic thrummy sounds from the three-cylinder engine. Despite it only having a 1.2litre capacity, the turbocharger works well to give the car plenty of grunt, and it never feels underpowered. It handles the road well, and is a comfortable place to be.
It’s in great condition mechanically too. It’s just had the wet-belt cambelt replaced by the Peugeot specialists, and then had a full service and MoT too. There’s a service book with some stamps in it, but fortunately, Nina kept most of the servicing invoices, and where a couple went missing, she got hold of copies from the garage to enable us to check the full history. I’ve now entered those details into the service book too for convenience. The full details are shown below. The car has been very reliable through Nina’s ownership – it’s only needed regular servicing items.
This full service history and MoT history all lines up, as you would expect, and confirms the 97,500 miles on the clock as absolutely warranted (and, of course, because it’s only had the one owner from new). The current MoT is valid through to August 2027. The car has been fully valeted, and comes with an Experian Data Check report (like HPI) which shows no problems and evidences that the car has never been seriously damaged or written off, has no outstanding finance, is not stolen and is a UK supplied vehicle.
Like all our cars, it also comes with a 100-point mechanical and functional test report.
The Motoring Press view
Praising its spacious, well-finished interior and smart styling, Parker’s Car Guide comments:-
“The second-generation Peugeot 3008 spearheaded something of a new lease of life for the French brand when it released in 2016. Peugeot embraced the SUV styling trend here, which lent itself well to the practical, family-friendly car the 3008 built its reputation on. The generation represented the French firm’s attempts to move up in the world, taking aim at the likes of Volkswagen.
Peugeot never used to be a brand famed for offering tactile, high-quality interiors in its cars of old, but the 3008 is a big step above previous models – with a striking overall interior layout. it does feel well built and it offers some very individually Peugeot touches. As a result, the 3008 offers a strong feel-good factor for the price. The small steering wheel, with instruments viewed over it, may be an acquired taste, but the cabin mostly works well. The Virtual Cockpit-style digital dials can display many different combinations of information from traditional analogue gauges to a pared-down setting which shows a digital speedometer and not much else.
Rear passengers benefit from wide opening doors, shaped for easy access. Child seats are easy to install and use, thanks to the tall ride height of the 3008, with standard Isofix points on the usual two outer seats. This roomy interior makes sense, given the large-SUV look of the Peugeot, but it’s more efficient than you might expect. The 3008 offers up one of the largest boots in its class. It’s easy to tumble the seats down, increasing capacity to 1,670 litres. The front passenger seat can be folded flat, too – meaning you can load items of up to 3m long, while the boot has an adjustable floor with removable side panels for added practicality. Despite the imposing shape, it doesn’t feel too big to manage on the road and when it comes to parking in a tight spot, plenty of assistance systems such as parking sensors and cameras help to provide a clearer picture of what’s going on around you. The 3008 scored a maximum rating of five stars when crash tested by Euro NCAP in 2016.
If you want a petrol 3008, you’ve got a choice of two. First up is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder, turbocharged unit named PureTech 130. As the name suggests, it offers 130hp and is a great fit in the 3008 with a useful 230Nm of torque available. The 130hp petrol motor is very smooth and quiet, emitting an eager thrum when worked hard. In a nutshell, this is a really nice engine that’s superbly matched to the 3008, and in many ways, the pick of the range. The engine is smooth and powerful and feels well suited to the car. It’s refined at low speeds, pulls strongly in all of its gears – despite 1.2-litres being on the small side for a five-seat SUV – and when you’re cruising on the motorway, it never feels underpowered – and it positively begs to be driven hard. While it obviously makes the most sense to those on a budget, the three-cylinder PureTech’s refined character is just as appealing for those with more to spend. The discontinued manual version in many ways makes more sense than the automatic with this small engine. As with performance, bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better for the 3008. The 130hp Puretech petrol model feels light and nimble around corners. The much heavier 180hp diesel feels unwieldy and heavy in comparison. The lighter models provide a reasonably good sense of control through the wheel, though the steering felt a little less intuitive in the more powerful models.
Claimed fuel economy varies from around 39mpg, to just over 56mpg for WLTP standards – a reasonable set of figures for the class of car, meaning low fuel bills.. Servicing and maintenance costs should prove reasonably affordable while insurance costs shouldn’t prove too pricey.
Peugeots do not historically have a good record for holding their value as used cars, though the 3008’s bold styling and popular SUV format should mean it depreciates less than other models from the brand, offsetting its higher price when compared with some of its rivals.
Should you buy a used Peugeot 3008?
If you’re in the market for a used family SUV that’s both stylish and practical – and who isn’t? – then we lean towards a yes, you should buy.
Peugeot managed to create a striking family car that not only looks great on the driveway; it has space for the family, drives well and doesn’t cost a bomb to run thanks to a range of frugal and fun-to-drive engines. What really makes it appealing is that stunning interior though – it’s far more interesting than the equivalent Skoda Karoq or Kia Sportage. Stick to the more modest models in the range and you won’t be disappointed. Prices for the 3008 have come down nicely and are looking increasingly good value, especially with the strong equipment levels on offer. It’s a car that’s more suited to family life and a realistic expectation of driving, rather than aspirations of open roads and hot-hatchback performance, and far more attractive (in our opinion) than the boxier MPVs that Peugeot has offered before. As a five-seater, the 3008 comes generous amounts of space front and rear, combined with the high seating position that has lead to SUVs becoming so popular for families that rarely venture off-road.”

A note about Warranties
We go to exceptional lengths to assure the mechanical condition of any car that we sell. Cars are generally much more reliable than was the case in the past – but they are ever increasing in complexity and should the unthinkable happen, repair costs can be high.
Many buyers prefer us to keep the price of our cars low, so we do not include a mechanical breakdown warranty as standard. However, we are agents for aftermarket warranty provider Warranty Assist.
If you wish to do so, you can optionally purchase a comprehensive Warranty Assist Warranty for this Peugeot 3008 covering 100% of the parts and labour cost on all major components, and labour rates up to £60ph and with a £50 excess, at a cost of £199 for 6-months or £249 for 12-months, or £449 for 24-months. This will cover repair costs up to the value of the vehicle. Lower or higher levels of warranty cover are available for different premiums if preferred.
