Very good condition, two owners from new, impeccably maintained with full service history including two cambelt changes, just serviced, warranted mileage, MoT till September 2020.  High specification including dual zone climate control, electrically adjusted memory seats, heated leather seats, headlamp washers, parking sensors all round, 6-disc CD changer, alloy wheels etc – more than £3k of options when new!

This is my personal Volvo V70 now offered for sale.  I’m a huge fan of big Volvo estates, having previously owned a 760 and a 960.  They are super reliable, extremely comfortable, and can be used like a van when necessary.  I bought this one five years ago through the trade to do a family holiday to the South of France.  Like all Volvo estates, it became completely indispensable, and has stayed with me ever since.  I’m only selling it now because I have upgraded to a newer edition.

This V70 is registered to myself.  It was first registered to a car dealer in Cardiff, but this must have been just a pre-registration as the next owner took ownership just a few days later in October 2004.  That owner kept the car for nearly ten years, and I then bought it through the trade in July 2014 with 132,000 miles on the clock.  It immediately did 2500 miles on that trip to Southern France, and since then has provided excellent service on family holidays, the school run, taking the dog out (helped by the integral roller cargo net/dog guard), trips to the tip etc.  It has never let us down – probably because it has been fully and thoroughly maintained, with a service every year since new, all of which are recorded in the service history.

This model V70 was available with different versions of the same 2435cc 5-cylinder 20v petrol engine – this is the higher output 170hp version, producing 225Nm torque and giving a 0-60 time of under 10 secs and a maximum speed of 134mph.  This is pretty nippy for a big family estate car – and it certainly never disappoints; it accelerates with confidence and cruises smoothly, stably and comfortably on the motorway, supported by its smooth 5-speed automatic transmission and cruise control.  The cornering is neat and well controlled, and the car handles with assurance.

It is finished in Magic Blue Pearlescent – a deep blue, almost purple in some lighting – complemented by black full leather interior.  It has been fitted with thick overmats from new, which has helped the interior to keep tidy despite the mileage that the car has covered.This example is well equipped too, with options including the full leather interior, the electric adjustment for the driver’s seat with memory function, winter pack (headlamp washers, heated front seats and overmats), parking sensors all round, rain sensor for the wipers, and pearlescent paint, and standard equipment including cruise control, dual-zone climate control, 17” alloy wheels, traction control, 6-cd changer, electric windows, electric power folding mirrors etc – everything you could want!

The Volvo now has a recorded mileage of just over 170,000 – so it has seen some service.  The mileage is fully warranted, and in my ownership the car has been very reliable, and everything performs just as you would expect it to do

The full service history is set out below, but in summary the car has had FIFTEEN services – one each year – and had the cambelt replaced first in 2010 at 75,000 miles and again in 2017 at 155,000 miles. Within the last year, the car has had a rear brake calliper, a front driveshaft, a couple of sensors and the catalytic converter replaced.    The MoT is valid through to next September.  There’s an MoT history printout to go with the car providing further evidence of the recorded mileage.  The front tyres were replaced in February at 167k, and the rear tyres have just been replaced – they are now a matched set of Kumho Ecsta tyres with between 6mm-7mm of tread.  The Volvo has been fully valeted, and has been Experian Data Checked (like HPI) and is clear, and comes with a 100-point vehicle inspection report.

The pictures illustrate how bright and well presented this car is.  There is no significant damage to the bodywork, but there are a number of light scratches and stone chips all round the car to evidence the mileage.  There is also a scuff to the nearside rear wheel arch (see photos) – it was there when I bought the car and was never significant enough for me to worry about getting it fixed.  There is also a small area where the lacquer is peeling off the front bumper – about the size of a 10p piece.

This version of the V70 was introduced in 2000, and despite its age it still warrants 3.5 stars out of five from Parker’s Car Guide, which goes on to comment:-

The V70 is expensive, but that hasn’t deterred buyers and for many it is the default choice when considering a big estate. As you would expect from Volvo, safety credentials are reassuring.  Driver and passenger airbags are complemented by a side impact protection system that includes side and curtain airbags. Getting comfortable behind the wheel shouldn’t be an issue as there’s lots of seat adjustment plus a steering wheel that adjusts for reach and rake. The blend of materials and Scandinavian design create a calming effect in most models.  The V70 has some of the best seats available and it’s a refined environment to travel in. The ride is comfortable and the heating and air conditioning get up to temperature quickly, even from a cold start. A rugged work horse with solid materials that wear well. There are plenty of electronic goodies and consequently occasional problems are reported, but nothing major to worry about.  Most V70 models put comfort and safety ahead of thrill seeking, and this shows in the handling which always feels stable and reassuring, but doesn’t inspire drivers to upset their passengers and cargo with high speed cornering antics. Electronic stability and traction control systems, fitted as standard to all models, help the driver to regain control in an emergency and prevent building up more speed in corners than it can comfortably deal with.”

On the road, the Volvo feels assured, confident and comfortable, with plenty of performance available when you need it, great handling and roadholding.  It isn’t fazed by being filled up with passengers, or by having the boot filled up when acting like a van!  Whilst the size and weight might lead you to expect it to be uneconomical in use, in fact it remains pretty good  –  official figures show 28.5 mpg for the combined cycle and 37.2 mpg for the extra urban cycle.  My experience is that you can regularly get over 25mpg from the car, in a mixture of high-speed motorway driving, town and country driving.  Road tax is £325 pa.

BODYWORK AND INTERIOR CONDITION

> As you can see from the photos, the bodywork is in good overall condition with no significant damage and no obvious rust.  Inevitably at this age and mileage, there are multiple stone chips and light scratches, with one patch of more significant scratching to the nearside rear wheel arch – see photos – and a small area of peeling lacquer to the front bumper
> The interior is very good throughout, with the exception of the handbrake gaiter which refuses to stay fixed in position

MECHANICAL CONDITION AND WHEELS/TYRES

> The car has covered just over 170,000 miles.  It goes very well indeed – and runs, steers, stops and goes round corners just as you would expect!
> All the interior warning lights come on and go off as they should
> All of the alloy road wheels have a combination of scuff marks and corrosion to the alloy
> The road tyres are all Kumho Ecsta PS71 225/40 ZR 17, and all have between 6mm-7mm of tread remaining.  The spare wheel is a temporary space saver spare, with a Hankook tyre

All in all – this is a great example of this highly capable family estate car.  The outstanding and documented maintenance regime combines with the enviable build quality to result in a car which is very reliable despite the mileage.   Given its extensive equipment list, fully valeted, just serviced, and well-priced, it all makes a compelling case for itself!
