As a car dealer, I can pretty much have my choice of cars (which is nice!).  This summer, I needed a large full-size MPV for an extended tour of Europe, including the collection of a 2.0m long metal bottle-rack from the south-coast of France.  I chose this Sharan for its combination of low mileage and ownership history, huge specification and immaculate condition – and it proved an excellent choice.  Over three weeks, I covered more than 3000 miles in it, and it performed faultlessly.  Its very comprehensive specification was used to the full, and it just gobbled up the miles quietly and comfortably, and despite being well-loaded up it still returned over 40mpg.

The Sharan is therefore registered to myself, since I bought it in June 2019.  It was first registered to a fleet provider in March 2013, but after only three months it then moved into a private owner in London who had it for the next six years until I bought it through the trade (the previous owner had traded it in for a new car).  So it has effectively had just the one owner through its life, and the service history shows the mileage building up steadily with about 8-10,000 miles added each year through that owner’s usage.

When I bought it, it had 61000 miles on the clock, and the first thing I did was to have the cambelt and water pump replaced and a couple of other minor jobs fixed.  I then registered the car to myself, and used it to commute to work for a few weeks, just to check that all was working ok – before then taking on its extended 3000+ mile road test through France, Italy and Switzerland.  During that trip, the only thing it needed was a top-up of Adblue.  Since returning from that trip, the car has had a service, even though it wasn’t really due yet, just to ensure that all is spot-on before now offering it for sale.

This model Sharan uses the powerful yet highly efficient 2.0 TDI 4-cylinder turbocharged common rail diesel engine, producing 140 bhp and an enormous 320NM torque.  This powers the car to 60mph in just over 10 secs – which is pretty nippy for such a large car – and on to a maximum speed of 119mph.  I can certainly confirm that it’s no slug – it accelerates with confidence and cruises smoothly, stably and comfortably on the motorway, aided by the super-smooth 6-speed DSG automatic transmission and cruise control.  You might think that this size of car would wallow about a bit when cornering, but the Sharan is well controlled and handles with assurance.

It is finished in Deep Black Pearlescent, with a very comfortable and practical grey fabric interior that looks to be very hard-wearing (it certainly shows no signs of wear so far).  The SE Bluemotion Tech trim level brings a mind-boggling list of specification, and I’m sure I won’t include all of it on this description…but some of the main highlights includes 6-speed DSG Automatic gearbox, touch-screen satellite navigation system (£730 option when new), DAB radio, Bluetooth for phone and music, electric sliding side doors (£640 option), electric tailgate (£500 option), electric parking brake, 7-full size seats each with three-point safety belt and head restraints, 5x isofix mounting points, 2x inbuilt child booster seats (£400 option), climate control with separate rear cabin controls (£105 option), front and rear parking sensors, heated seats, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring system, self-parking (£215 option), roof rails with lockable roof bars (£250 option), front and rear fog lights (£235 option), electric heated and folding mirrors (£235 option), electric windows, engine start/stop, auto hill hold, pearlescent paint (£500 option)…. The list just goes on and on…..

This Sharan has a recorded mileage of just over 65,000.  The mileage is fully warranted, with its very low ownership records and very comprehensive service and maintenance history.  Volkswagens in general have an enviable reputation for reliability and build quality, and my experience with this car certainly backs that up.  It all performs just as you would expect it to do.

The full service history is set out below, but in summary the car has had seven services – one each year – and had the cambelt replaced in June 2019. The MoT is valid through to next February, and the last MoT had no advisory items.  There’s an MoT history printout to go with the car providing further evidence of the recorded mileage.  The tyres are all good quality makes, and evenly worn with around 5-6mm of tread remaining.  The Sharan has been fully valeted, and has been Experian Data Checked (like HPI) and is clear, and comes with the usual Reg Barton Cars 100-point mechanical and functional inspection report.

The pictures illustrate how very bright, shiny and well presented this car is.  There is no damage to the bodywork, just a couple of light scratches and stone chips as you might expect at this age and mileage.

This Sharan is still the current model, introduced in 2010 and has earned itself a enviable 4-stars out of five from Parker’s Car Guide, which goes on to comment:-

“Launched in 2010, the second generation Volkswagen Sharan replaced the successful original. Rivalling the likes of the Ford Galaxy, the latest version was an all-new model.  On average Volkswagen had shaved 30kg of weight from the Sharan which, combined with a 12mm lower stance, improved ride and handling characteristics, making it feel more like a conventional car to drive. Standard safety kit includes ABS, stability control and seven airbags including a knee airbag. Euro NCAP awarded the Sharan the top marks of five stars in the safety tests, with an impressive score of 96% for adult protection and 80% for child protection. The Sharan can seat seven people.  The centre row features three individual seats and can be moved up to 160mm back and forth. Six of the seven seats can be folded flat which gives a cavernous load space – especially helpful when needing to move those larger items of furniture.  Access to the rear seats is via a pair of sliding doors: this is the first time this feature has been available on the Sharan. The sliding doors and tailgate can be specified with electric motors so that they can be operated automatically.  As you would expect, the interior is of good quality. The plastics are soft to touch and the layout is just like any other VW passenger car – very logical. The controls are within easy reach of the driver and although the dials may not be overly stylish, they are easy to navigate. The driving position is good and the steering column adjusts for reach and height.  It really is ‘so quiet’ in the new Sharan. Road roar from the tyres and wind noise is minimal because the cabin is so well insulated: the engine is barely audible at cruising speeds. For such a large car, Volkswagen Sharan running costs are pleasingly low.  All models feature stop/start fuel-saving technology meaning all Volkswagen Sharan emissions are low for a car of this size. Like all Volkswagens this is well built and durable.  Every part (with exception to the sun blinds) is brand new and the engines have been proven in other models so we do not expect any major problems with the new Sharan. While it’s competent, rather than engaging, on winding B-roads cruising along motorways is where the VW performs best, being smooth and unflustered. Even strong side winds don’t trouble it, despite its relative height and slab sides.

On the road, the Sharan feels assured, confident and comfortable, with plenty of performance available when you need it, great handling and roadholding.  It isn’t fazed by being filled up with passengers, or by having the boot filled up when acting like a van!  It has thoroughly proven itself in my ownership whether that was when romping up the Alps in Switzerland, mile-munching on French Motorways, or being laden up with crates of wine in Italian vineyards.  Whilst the size and weight might lead you to expect it to be uneconomical in use, in fact the Euro 5 emissions standard engine is quite the opposite –  official figures show 49.6 mpg for the combined cycle and 56.5 mpg for the extra urban cycle.  My experience is that you can easily get over 40mpg from the car without even trying, in a mixture of high-speed motorway driving, town and country driving, all when well-laden.  The large 70-litre fuel tank means that you have a usable range of well over 500-miles.  The 149g/km emissions means that car tax is just £160 pa.

If you wish to do so, you can also optionally purchase a comprehensive Warranty Direct Gold vehicle warranty covering all major components, at a cost of £169 for 6-months or £225 for a year with a £75 claim excess.  Please click on “our services” above for more details.

> The car has covered just over 65,000 miles.  It goes very well indeed – and runs, steers, stops and goes round corners just as you would expect!
> All the interior warning lights come on and go off as they should.
