Mitsubishi Grandis 2.4 Elegance Automatic 7-str MPV Estate, 2005 (05), Sterling Silver, 130k, £SOLD

Sixteen large-format photos also below!

This is a great example of the highly-versatile and very highly regarded Mitsubishi Grandis MPV.  It’s the very well-equipped Elegance specification, matched to the punchy 2.4-litre petrol engine and smooth automatic transmission.  As a used car, the petrol engined version is significantly cheaper to buy than the diesel-engined equivalent, yet remains pretty economical for the size and weight of the vehicle.

I’ve known this car for a long time.  It was originally a demonstrator for Mitsubishi Motors, and back in 2006 they sold it to a friend of mine, David.  David loved the car, having it well-looked after and maintained by a local mechanic.  David used it extensively, driving it all over the country and occasional European trips.  He had a Witter towbar fitted with which he occasionally pulled just a small trailer for trips to the tip etc.  Having owned the car for best part of ten years, it came time to change it – so David bought a new Mitsubishi, reflecting the confidence he has had in the marque built up from the experience with this Grandis.  I bought the Grandis from him for use in my wife’s children’s Day Nursery business, so for the last couple of years it has been lightly used on school runs and for the occasional outing, clocking up just a couple of thousand miles each year.  We’ve just changed the Nursery policy, and are no longer providing transport for children to and from school, so the car is now for sale.

During the time we have owned the car, it has been completely reliable.  However, as a business where we are transporting other people’s children, it’s been important to us that that car is immaculately maintained, serviced, and ready to go at any time – so we have continued with the attention to detail on the servicing.

This Grandis was first registered in April 2005, to Mitsubishi themselves, with David buying it in June 2006.  David then sold it to me in September 2015 with 126,000 miles on the clock, and we then transferred it from our personal name into the Nursery ownership in February 2016 (so altogether it shows four owners, with ourselves being the last two).  The car now shows just over 130,000 miles.

This model Grandis has the smooth and powerful 2.4-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine, producing 162bhp.  This powers the car to 60mph in around 11.7 secs, and on to a maximum speed of 118mph.  It certainly accelerates with confidence, and cruises smoothly, stably and comfortably on the motorway, aided by the 4-speed automatic transmission and cruise control.  You might think that this size of car would wallow about a bit when cornering, but the Grandis is well controlled and handles with assurance.

It’s finished in Sterling Silver metallic, with full black leather interior.  The Elegance trim level brings a very high level of standard specification, including climate control, four electric windows, electric folding mirrors, cruise control, 6-in dash CD player, 5-spoke 17” alloy wheels, twin glass sunroofs, ESP/Traction control, trip computer and a full complement of airbags.  Add to that the automatic transmission, leather trim and that Witter towbar and you’ve got a very compelling proposition.

This Grandis has a recorded mileage of just over 130,000.  The mileage is fully warranted, not least because the car has both a known history and a very comprehensive service and maintenance history.  Japanese cars in general, and Mitsubishi in particular, have an enviable reputation for reliability, so I wasn’t at all put off by this mileage when I bought the car a couple of years ago – and it has proved entirely reliable for us ever since.  There aren’t any odd noises, squeaks or rattles, and the car performs just as you would expect it to do.

The full service history is set out below, but in summary the car has had eleven services – pretty much one a year.  The cambelt and balancer shaft belt was replaced first in February 2010 at 72500 miles, and then again in July 2014 at 119000 miles when the water pump was also replaced.  The handbook suggests that the belt is replaced every 54000 miles, so having been done only 10000 miles or so ago, there’s a bit of time to go on that!

The MoT is valid right through to next May, and the car has covered only about 500 miles since the MoT was last done.  There was one advisory item then – for a cracked front numberplate which has since been replaced.  The tyres are all very good as you would expect.

The Grandis has been fully valeted, and has been Experian Data Checked (like HPI) and is clear.  I very much doubt that the car has ever been smoked in – we don’t smoke and neither does David or his family.  There’s also an MoT history printout showing how the mileage has built up through the car’s lifetime, providing further evidence to support the mileage shown.

The pictures illustrate how very bright, shiny and well presented this car is.  There is no significant damage to the bodywork, just a few light scratches as you might expect at this age and mileage, and a couple of scuffs to the rear bumper.

The Grandis was introduced in 2004 and has earned itself a well-respected place in the UK car scene.  Parker’s Car Guide comments:-
The sharp-looking Grandis is a stylish people carrier that can seat seven thanks to a spacious cabin and clever extra folding seats that disappear into the boot floor. It comes well equipped as standard – making it good value for money, especially as a used buy.  Originally just one engine was offered – a 165bhp four-cylinder 2.4-litre with a four-speed automatic gearbox; it’s well suited to motorway cruising and gets to 62mph in 11.7 seconds. Despite its size, Grandis doesn’t feel too cumbersome on the road. The steering is light and it doesn’t offer much feel, but the benefit is that it’s easy to manoeuvre in town – even parking is quite easy. The driver’s seat is well shaped, gives good support and is adjustable in many ways – there’s even a flip-down armrest. This makes the Grandis great for long journeys while all the dials and switches are centrally positioned and intuitive to use. The Grandis is great for long distance trips where its refined cabin and quiet engine make it well suited to motorway cruising. Mitsubishis have a well-earned reputation for mechanical reliability and there is no reason to expect the Grandis will be any different. Overall quality is good, with decent materials used inside and a solid feel to the construction.  If you want a seven-seat, distinctive and affordable people carrier then the Grandis could be an ideal choice.”

On the road, the Grandis feels assured, confident and comfortable, with plenty of performance available when you need it, great handling and roadholding.  It isn’t fazed by being filled up with passengers, or by having the boot filled up when acting like a van!  Whilst the size and weight might lead you to expect it to be uneconomical in use, in fact the official figures show 28.2 mpg for the combined cycle and 34.9mpg for the extra urban cycle.  The diesel will obviously do more than this, but comes at a significantly higher purchase price, which would take some time to recover!

If you wish to do so, you can also optionally purchase a comprehensive Warranty Assist Gold vehicle warranty covering all major components, at a cost of £119 for 6-months, £149 for a year or £269 for two years with a £75 claim excess.  Please click on “our services” above for more details.
